positive reviews from some notable YouTube gurus such as Better Sax and Saxologic.  We established contact with each other and they kindly sent me a sample of their alto and tenor models.  I was hugely impressed right from the get-go.  The presentation, the quality of the case, and in the context of student saxes sourced from China I felt like I was handling something that had been very well put together - a solid build, smooth ergonomics, and nice even and relatively light action.  The real test, of course, is how it plays.  And the answer to this is that it played beautifully, up and down the entire range, without any snags at all.  Quite often, when an instrument ships all that way, an instrument may not hold its set-up and need a certain amount of regulation work, but it felt as though the horn had just been handed to me straight from the technician's bench!  The response was immediate, and the tone took on nice centered quality, with a degree more 'darkness' in the sound than is normal for a modern student instrument.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis test was done using my trusty old Meyer as that's what I'm used to.  However, I thought it would be interesting to see how it responded to the stock mouthpiece that it ships with - and the answer to this is that it plays very well with the JP mouthpiece and ligature.  If you are a beginner you will be fine with this mouthpiece, which offers a rounded sound with a decent response.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMy final point would be that the intonation is very good and stable throughout, often a nagging area on student range I was extremely curious to see how this upper range of models stacked up in comparison.  The whole mantra of Jean-Paul is to offer great quality products but at affordable prices.  This is certainly the case with the AS-400 model, and I believe this 860 achieves a similar objective.  It is being described on their website as a Pro model and while I find that there are many aspects of its build and tonal qualities that say 'I'm a pro sax' I see it more as a highly refined intermediate sax.  And on many levels, it offers a more robust tone and ergonomically satisfying experience than some of these, and yet at an even more competitive price, so all in all a great purchase if you're looking to upgrade without breaking the it can take a toll on the right arm, and if this is your first outing on a soprano why not start out curved, where you can let the neck strap do all the work for you.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn addition to this, there really aren't so many curved sopranos out there, and by producing one at this sweet price point, I think it will be a very attractive proposition.  It blows incredibly well, it's highly responsive and, crucially for a soprano (particularly around this price point) it's IN TUNE!  Ergonomically everything is laid out well.  My only slight gripe would be that I had the tendency to foul the key arm to the low B key with my E key finger.  On some curved sopranos the bell keys are moved to the opposite side of the sax to avoid any conflicts in this area.  BetterSax chose to keep the traditional modern right-hand-side bell key look.
