It took me a few minutes to adapt to the shortness of facing (since I am more accustomed to medium to medium long facing soprano pieces), but after a few minutes of noodling I found getting around on this mouthpiece to be effortless. The sound is BIG! And I really got the feeling that I could project to concert hall levels with very little effort. The articulation and response was also excellent across the whole range of the instrument, even into the extremely high register up to high G (and even beyond!). Another fine example from Vandoren! If you’re after a top quality classical piece then this ticks all the boxes, although I could quite easily see this being used as a good all-round piece as well. If you’re going to be behind an exclusive line you want it to be a good one and you want it to be a mouthpiece that speaks the language of many people, not just a few. This mouthpiece does just that! From playing the first note on this piece I realized that I was going to enjoy playing every note on the horn, just from the immediate tonality and response. As you get into it you realize the classic dark and smooth tone is present throughout the entire range and at every dynamic level. It articulates cleanly and at speed. When pushed it doesn’t particularly go bright, it holds on to its basic core. The attention to detail is top-notch and this is immediately evident by the smooth unmarked tip and rails. This piece was very responsive, played very smoothly with very stable intonation and tuning throughout the whole range of the sax. I was incredibly impressed by the number of tonal colors that can be produced from this piece, which is down to the vintage resin material used. The sub-tone was absolutely effortless and the tone came out warm and full-bodied, which makes it perfect for playing smooth ballads. When pushed this piece had some serious power and this didn’t become harsh at loud volumes which can often be the case on the soprano. The piece was actually very resistant I found, even going to a soft reed on a 6 was still a hard push, which gave it that dry dark sound that Gregorys were famous for. It also accounts for the very centered and focused core it gives, almost like a classical mouthpiece, but the sound around that was much larger with more projection. It is also has quite a lot of top end in the sound as well, not necessarily brightness, but this edge that just floats at the top of the sound which really brings out the top notes. Also the profile of the beak of the mouthpiece is quite thin, like a Berg Larsen, Selmer Concept or Lebayle AT etc, and the tip rail is astoundingly thin which should make for great performance. Interestingly, I usually suggest either trying a tip opening larger than normal on an Aizen but I definitely wouldn't try that with this one. This is because the reed actually has less length in which to vibrate. This doesn't hinder playing at all, in fact it makes the Jet one of the greatest altissimo pieces of all times. Altissimo still works great with a little softer reed. These are my observations and how I like to play the Jet. For example on a JodyJazz DV Tenor 7* I play a Rico Jazz Select 3M and on the Jet Tenor 7* I prefer a 3S and sometimes even a 2H11. The Jet is still fee blowing but I think the Jet's shorter facing curve makes a difference with the reed. The main message is that anytime you are trying a new mouthpiece two things are very important: finding the right reed for the mouthpiece and making sure that while you try the mouthpiece you are in tune. Don't assume that it will go on the neck in the same place as your previous mouthpiece. In fact the Jet pushes on further than many mouthpieces. The metal Yanagisawa mouthpieces separate themselves from other because of the amount of tonal colours that can be produced. These pieces seem to work exceptionally well on the baritone; they blow freely and you can hit the more difficult low notes a lot more easily. I found you can get a real fatness to the sound that really enhances the overall presence of the baritone and this accentuates the low-end sound. This piece is very powerful as well so you can really cut through; and the notes come out clearly and un-muffled which can be a problem on the baritone sax.
