Full bodied, Dark & Complex P.Mauriat Artist Model

Introducing the new custom-designed 600XJ Artist model! The renowned P Mauriat-beauty and depth of tone is taken in a new direction; here they have created an instrument with a sound that is much more centred and directional, typically reminiscent of the Mark VI sound. No Top F#, no rolled tone holes and various customizations, this horn will appeal to the most demanding jazz players.

P Mauriat have attended to many details to give this Artist model a unique flavour and set it apart from their mainstream 66 and 76 models. There are modifications in the bow and neck, while the body is that of the 66. In addition, this model has no rolled tone holes and instead features a very low action, contributing towards its highly focussed sound. This close action makes each 600XJ ergonomically supreme, allowing the player to play technical passages with ease. This sax can be told apart from the other P Mauriats as it features both a silver-plated neck and lyre screw and a bow to body brace. It also has no top F# key, making the horn even lighter than the already light 66R models.

Staff Review

This sax really interests me because P Mauriat have thrown us something a little different from the norm. Of course, it immediately identifies as a Mauriat instrument (not just from the look) but from the sound, which is characteristically full bodied, dark and complex. However, the first difference is that there is a more obvious back-pressure over and above the 66R models. And the second difference is that the sound is a lot more focussed! I understand that the modifications in neck and bow may be a contributing factor, but I also see that the action is a fair bit lower and wonder whether it has a say in giving this definition. It certainly does allow the player to flow effortlessly around the instrument. I love the fact that there is no top F# key – personally I haven’t used this key in about 10 years and so by removing it not only do you make the sax lighter but you also have a truer airflow through this crucial part of the instrument.

I know that P Mauriat worked in conjunction with one of their artists, the fine US player, Ryan Saranich, when R&Ding this horn. The resulting effect is an instrument that carries all of the typically wonderful tonal features of a Mauriat horn but refines certain aspects in order to create a more customised feel. Jim@sax.co.uk
