Sax legend Bob Mintzer & award-winning saxophonist Alex Hahn's first choice of saxophone.
A serious heavyweight addition to our pro sax range, the 52nd Street Tenor captures a classic vintage sound – full-bodied and free blowing – and combines this with wonderful ergonomics.
The 52nd Street saxophone is a professional instrument and comes unlacquered for a truly vintage appearance. It is an exceptionally responsive horn in all registers from low to high and produces a big, fat sound with precise intonation. A larger bell and rolled-style tone holes contribute to the sound qualities of this instrument that many compare to some of the great vintage horns of the past. Solid construction with comfortable hand position and extras such as adjustable palm keys.
Lacquer is simply put, a paint that is applied onto a material, for the purpose of keeping the material underneath from tarnishing or making the material an appealing colour. An unlacquered instrument simply has no lacquer applied to the base metal.
Many unlacquered saxophones begin life with a polished finish that is visually similar to a standard lacquered instrument. However, as soon as the saxophone leaves the factory, the tarnishing process will begin. This will give the saxophone a real vintage appeal, the envy of all jazzers out there. This will also explain why it may have signs of aging when you receive it.
Aurally, this means the material has complete freedom of movement for resonance. This will give the tone a fullness on the fringes of the note playing, really filling the space and giving the bottom end especially a real presence.

"Initially when I heard about these horns I saw that they were connected with Bob Mintzer and knew he had great things to say about them. However, it wasn’t until I met him out at the NAMM show, representing Eastman, that I realised first-hand just how much he actually loves his tenor! I then tried one for myself and couldn’t believe how full-bodied and deep the sound was, as well as being effortless to play throughout the entire range. The horn also had feeling of solidarity and sturdiness under the fingers which just added to the joy of playing it! This sax has the hallmarks of a being a classic." - Jim (sax.co.uk)
